About the Artist
Mattie MacNeil is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Her practice spans graphic design, textiles, photography, videography, sculpture and painting.
Drawn to the unconventional, Mattie explores themes of social dysfunction, excess, strange behaviours and humanity. While her subject matter leans into the unusual and quirky, her process is playful and intuitive. She works experimentally across materials, such as acrylic paint, fabric and scrap metal. Her delicate sculpted clay orchids bring a sense of lightness and grace to her otherwise curious and unfamiliar explorations.
Mattie graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Whitecliffe in 2022 and has since exhibited her work in a range of locations. She was also a finalist in the 2021 Eden Arts Art School Awards. Now Mattie is looking to explore new materials, deepen her research, and evolve her process. She's interested in taking her work to an international audience and sharing it more widely.
