Justina Makurata Fenaroli (nee Bisset), comes from a family of artists, born and bred in the quiet seaside town of Devonport, Auckland. When she was a child she chose to go by her middle name Maku, after her grandmother Makurata, which means 'dew drops on the rata tree'. Maku's whanau hail from Waimana, and are very proud Tuhoe people. Her artworks tell stories and are an avenue for her to share her Māori heritage and Māori culture with others.
