About the Artist
Grace grew up in Whakatu, Nelson and is now based in it’s picturesque countryside of the Moutere, where she lives and paints from her tiny home. Her pieces often reflect the beauty from her surrounds, and are known for their lively and joyous nature. She is drawn to natural scenes and charming structures with interesting textures, pops of colour and light. She aims to simplify her paintings, letting colour and light tell the story and therefore encouraging viewers to use their imagination to fill in the gaps. She currently paints with acrylic, but has previously used and loves exploring other mediums such as gouache, watercolour and pencil.
The youngest of 5 children, Grace has been creative since she was little, and was lucky to go to a small historic primary school that encouraged artistic pursuits. A local artist used to come and teach art classes weekly. From a young age, whether she was performing, sewing, crocheting, playing sport, painting, or playing the ukulele, she loved trying something new and was relentless in her pursuit to get better through lots and lots of practice.
At College her classes were predominantly art focussed and upon graduating decided to study Fashion technology in Wellington. After working in fashion for a period she realised that although she still loved sewing, the industry wasn’t for her.
During a life pivot, she decided to get back into art whilst working at a local gallery cafe, there she was encouraged by her bosses to create a small greeting card and print collection to sell in the gallery store. Soon after, in 2015, she started her artist instagram account and has been sharing her journey since then. Showing her exploratory, curious nature and a plethora of styles, mediums and subjects along the way. In that time she also trained as a hairstylist up in Auckland which created another canvas for her to be creative and although took up most of her life, still continued to practice her art when she could.
Grace’s art story has not grown out of an intent to be successful quickly but a consistent and quiet love for the craft and her determination to get better and better through showing up, sharing her art along the way and the vulnerability that that involves. She likes sharing the process to her instagram followers in the hope to inspire and to show the reality of how much practice is involved to get better at any pursuit. And that it’s okay to share something that isn’t necessarily very good! It’s a constant practice of painting from the heart and not being dissuaded by the opinions of others. She strives to keep her practice organic and pleasurable.
