About this print
This artwork originates from a blend of Angus's surroundings and personal interpretation. He often merges and stylizes photographs taken from his environment in his creative process. For this piece, the focus is on light.
The initial idea came to Angus after returning from overseas, staying at a friend's place. Jet-lagged and awake in the early morning, he was struck by the serene morning light over a small man-made lake nearby. Being away from familiar surroundings heightened his appreciation for the concept of home, making him reflect on its significance. The work is titled "Castles" - why? A rock, a cornerstone worth defending, simply, Angus's Kiwilandia.

Printed by Angus Collis on KOO, Japanese Washi Paper (made with 100% Gampi fibre) with 22 layers of colour.
Framed Size 470mm x 480mm
Framing style
Matted in a Raw Timber Box Frame with Art Glass (AR70)
This style features a custom mat surround, this speckled white mat pairs well with Angus's organic printing method. Often considered a more traditional framing style, the addition of a border creates a larger, striking finish. It adds depth while providing a clean, timeless look.
Finished with AR70 Art Glass, it reduces reflections and glare, ensuring the print remains the focal point.
About the Artist
Angus Collis primarily works in painting and woodblock printmaking, employing a traditional Japanese hand-pressing technique. By using a baren (a small, rounded pressing tool) over a mechanical press, Angus can control the pressure across the surface. This element of added control allows Angus to create gradients of colour, and layer speckled tones that blur the lines between printmaking and painting.
The use of traditional woodblocks creates a natural grain in Angus’s prints - his choice of thin, delicate papers is crucial to his process as it allows the ink to transfer better under hand pressure. This combination of wood grain texture and responsive thin paper creates a natural dialogue between materials that becomes part of the artistic outcome.
