Helen's use of layering forms, brushstrokes, blocks of transparent and opaque colour, one step informing the next. Although the earlier layers are ‘lost’ and visually absent, their presence is still felt through the final artwork -in both the depth of texture and colour and the richness of the story told.

About the Artist
Helen pays special attention to colour in her work, often exploring muted pastels with inky darks and bold saturation. Soft shapes float across a multi-layered surface. Interconnecting pockets of colour with subtle differences in tone and a history of marks below the surface create depth and texture.
Helen Dean is originally from the UK, where she gained her Bachelors in Fine Art but moved to Auckland in 2003. Since 2016 she has been painting in her Titirangi studio and sending work to homes all over the world.
