About this print
The clock tower is a memorial to the 93 people who died in the earthquake that hit the city in 1931 – two plaques on the tower list their names. Designed by local architect Sydney Chaplin, who won a national contest for its design. It was completed in 1935. It is in the art deco style and includes chiming bells, making it a distinctive feature of the city.
