About this artwork
Akin to a recipe, Matthew's artistic methodology structures both his research and creative process. This piece dissects temporal moments into their fundamental fragments, and explores how these ‘ingredients’ share connections.
Recipe_15
Starting at the top left corner of a portrait sheet of paper, begin with a single mark on the top left corner of the sheet of paper using the Signal Black marker.
Repeat this action moving down the paper keeping equal spacing between the marks
trying to keep them at a similar size and in line with one another.
When you reach the bottom of the page, start a new column running parallel to the
previous with equal spacing, and repeat this action till you fill the drawing space.
Once you have filled the drawing space, take the Petrol Blue marker and overlay a mark
with a 2mm offset to the right and bottom of Signal Black marks, repeat this action until all the marks are covered.
Then repeat with the Signal Black marker using the same method as before.

About the Artist
Matt Torr (M.T) is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, whose artistic exploration is a response to the daily rituals that populate his domestic landscapes. M.T dissects temporal moments into their fundamental fragments or 'ingredients'. His artistic methodology structures both his research and creative process. M.T explores how these ‘ingredients’ share connections, through his process of list making and methods of re-assembling. Through this process, he challenges perceptions of mundane actions and presents a unique perspective through which to view the familiar. By elevating the ordinary, M.T encourages us to find beauty, meaning, and inspiration in the everyday moments that often go unnoticed.
With a Bachelor's Degree in Spatial Design, M.T's artistic practice was recognised early on when he was awarded the 'Most Outstanding First Year' in 2012. He went on to receive the esteemed 'Artichoke Award’ in 2015 and the prestigious 'Resene Color Award' in 2017. After spending four years working in landscape design, he pursued further study, culminating in the completion of a Master of Design with Honours (First Class) from AUT University in 2023.
