About this print
The endearing Kakapo is a nocturnal, flightless, ground dwelling parrot endemic to New Zealand. They’re solitary birds, often occupying the same home range for years. They can live up to 95 years and are the world’s heaviest parrot, weighing up to 4kg. They forage on the ground for food and awkwardly climb trees with their beak and claws. Kakapo were once widespread in New Zealand, but with introduced predators like cats, stoats and rats, the population plummeted to only 50 birds by the 1990’s. All Kakapo were relocated to off-shore islands and are monitored under intense conservation. Their population is slowly recovering.
