ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emma Huia Lovegrove

Emma Huia Lovegrove is a Kirikiriroa based painter and illustrator. She graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2019 and has since worked on a variety of projects. These range from a textile collaboration with Pauanesia to illustrating Maria Gill’s Remarkable Animal Stories. Emma held her first solo exhibition titledWhenua at Endemicworld in 2020 and has also been involved in many group exhibitions throughout Aotearoa.

Emma uses her art practice as a way to foster her relationship with the landscapes that she visits and the varied nature they contain. She is drawn to locations that feel wild and untouched, but when you peer more closely, vibrant ecosystems thrive and intricate patterns are revealed.  She is particularly interested in the relationships between living and non-living, human and non-human. As an avid climber and tramper, a large portion of Emma’s practice is devoted to wandering, climbing, photographing, foraging and sketching within the landscapes she visits.
