About this painting
This tiki is crafted for anyone who has a deep connection with the ocean. For Maku who grew up by the sea, being near water evokes a profound sense of home. This sentiment is embodied in the tiki, capturing the essence of kainga (home) by the ocean. The piece features washes of watercolour and hidden intricate details, presenting a modern interpretation of the korowai and kete. It reflects Maku’s fascination with integrating traditional Māori elements into contemporary life, transforming them into functional and stylish everyday items.

About the Artist
Maku Fenaroli (Justina Makurata Bisset) is a self taught artist, born in Auckland but practicing in Melbourne since 2013. She has enjoyed drawing and painting all her life but only really started sharing it with the world when she moved to Melbourne. Her Iwi is Ngāi Tūhoe, and her whanau hail from the Waimana ranges, a beautiful part of New Zealand that Maku enjoys visiting. The mum of two, having moved away from New Zealand feels a sense of home when creating Māori artwork with her signature layered patterns, and as such has expressed that her artwork will primarily feature Maori work moving forward.
