When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise to the year ahead.

In this piece, Rakai sought to reclaim the koru and experiment with abstract forms that represent the real world. Within the composition, you can observe the moon in its final Tangaroa phase. The negative space reveals the presence of the nine stars of Matariki, while below, the sun is about to rise.

Allocation of proceeds

To ensure a tangible difference, this year’s sale proceeds will be directed to support a whānau from Omahu. This family has faced significant challenges from Cyclone Gabrielle including extensive damage to their home. Without insurance coverage, they have been tirelessly rebuilding with the invaluable assistance and generosity of a kind-hearted community.

Rakai Karaitiana's motivation as an artist lies in the process of exploring ideas and seeking a visual language that can be articulate yet intentionally illegible at times. His journey of exploration and expression continuously develops his craft, acquiring new skills and disciplines. He embraces the uncertainty of how his art will be received, as his interest lies in the act of creating itself. Ultimately, his purpose is to share a part of himself and invite others to interpret and connect with his art in their own unique way.
